How to Tell If You're Feeding the Right Amount

The calculator gives you a starting point. Your dog's actual body condition is the only reliable feedback loop. Check weekly:

Too Much
  • • Can't feel ribs without pressing
  • • No visible waist when viewed from above
  • • Abdomen doesn't tuck when viewed from side
  • → Reduce by 10% for 2–3 weeks, reassess
Ideal
  • • Ribs easily felt with light pressure, not visible
  • • Clear waist visible from above
  • • Slight abdominal tuck from side
  • → Maintain current amount
Too Little
  • • Ribs, spine, or hip bones visible
  • • Prominent waist / hourglass shape
  • • Loss of muscle mass
  • → Increase by 10%, rule out medical causes

Why Bag Guidelines Are Just a Starting Point

The feeding guidelines on kibble bags are based on average unspayed/unneutered adult dogs at moderate activity. The actual energy needs of any given dog can vary by 50% or more from the bag recommendation due to:

The formula this calculator uses is based on the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) — a standard veterinary calculation using the formula: RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75. This is then multiplied by a life stage and activity factor to estimate Daily Energy Requirement (DER).

Don't forget treats: Treats count toward your dog's daily calories. A rule of thumb: treats should not exceed 10% of daily caloric intake. For a 50-lb dog eating 1,200 kcal/day, that's 120 kcal in treats — roughly 10–15 small training treats or one medium biscuit.
